Go to the world- famous Saint Louis Zoo that has educated, entertained and earned a place in the hearts of everyone. The City of St. Louis set aside 77 acres in Forest Park for a zoo and named a Zoological Board of Control in 1913. State legislation provided that "the zoo shall be forever free," which has kept the Zoo accessible to millions of visitors ever since.
The third largest zoo in the country, with 700 species of animals on exhibit, this place is a must- see on a family vacation to St. Louis. More than 11,000 animals and insects cohabitate happily across the Zoo's 90 acres, and millions of visitors each year visit and ride the Zooline railroad to watch the lions prowl Big Cat Country, the birds soar through the 1904 World's Fair Bird House, and the chimps ape around their ''jungle'' home.
This Forest Park staple also features the River's Edge, where elephants, cheetahs, hippos and other riverside dwellers reside in lush surroundings. Other exhibits include the Living World education center, an Insectarium full of creepy crawlers and the ever- popular Emerson Children's Zoo, where kids can feed the birds, pet koalas and other cuddly creatures. No visit to St. Louis is complete without a trip to the world- famous Saint Louis Zoo.
