Schneithorst's Hofamberg Inn

Really three restaurants in one, this establishment offers dining al fresco in the Biergarten with an open deck, traditional Bavarian dining in the main dining room of the Bierkeller and casual Kaffee Haus dining with tables for four and leather- backed chairs. The bierkeller is decorated in traditional German style with a vaulted ceiling, large dining tables and decorative beer steins. A St. Louis mainstay, it has been serving hearty German fare like weiner schnitzel and sauerbraten since 1917.

Handsome Teutonic antiques greet you in the foyer and the waiter's stand is massive and impressive. But the dining rooms are rather tired and worn and lack the initial charm of the place. This is a favorite of Ladue's senior citizens; many coming daily for their favorites. You'll see a few young couples now and then, likely mimicking their parents' dining patterns. The bar, on the other hand, is a lively after- working watering hole. The sauerbraten, an Old World German favorite, was so overwhelmed by its brine- induced flavor that it rendered the palate impervious to the nuances of the side dishes and the wine.
